Change Image DPI

Some desktop publishing flows reject files because embedded DPI reads 72 even when pixel dimensions are fine. This tool re-encodes JPG or PNG at the same pixel grid while writing your chosen DPI into supported metadata slots.

Pixels stay the same; embedded print density changes on JPG/PNG output.

Writing 300 DPI updates density metadata. Print size changes if pixel count stays the same.

DPI is not the same as resolution

Pixels define detail on screen. DPI tells layout software how to map those pixels to inches. Changing DPI here does not add detail, it updates the tag printers read. Read the rejection wording carefully, error toasts sometimes omit format details that still block you. Open the download once before you close the tab. If the result looks too soft, tighten framing before lowering quality again.

When 300 DPI is requested

Photo labs and visa print specs often ask for three hundred DPI at a physical size. If pixels are too low, upscaling elsewhere is required, this page will not invent pixels. Wide heroes and identity crops behave differently under the same ceiling, choose framing for the actual job. Preview against both light and dark backgrounds when edges or transparency may change after encoding. If the result looks too soft, tighten framing before lowering quality again.

JPEG JFIF density fields

For JPG output, density is patched in the JFIF header when present. Software that ignores metadata still sees the same pixels. Outdoor foliage steals encoder budget, crop tighter when the subject is a person or package. Preview against both light and dark backgrounds when edges or transparency may change after encoding. Portals care about clearing the limit more than hitting a precise byte total.

PNG physical pixel chunk

PNG output inserts a pHYs chunk with pixels-per-meter derived from your DPI choice. Match the published width×height first when both rules appear, then return for weight targeting if needed. Start from the original export whenever you still have it, not a chat-compressed copy. Being under the cap is the real pass condition; exact byte matching is uncommon.

Pair with dimension checkers

Run Check Image DPI first if you only need to read existing metadata. Use this page when you must write a new value. Very large source dimensions fight small byte budgets; the engine may reduce width and height when quality alone fails. Use one clear filename and extension so portals do not reject odd suffixes. If the result looks too soft, tighten framing before lowering quality again.

When a sibling tool is the better next step from change image dpi

If rejection continues, re-read help text for a second hidden rule, pixels, MIME type, or DPI, rather than looping the same export. Sibling tools cover those constraints explicitly. Messenger handoffs can re-encode JPEG and push a file back over the limit. Save with a simple name and a single extension before you upload again. Width and height on the result card update whenever the engine changes dimensions.

Verifying the download after change image dpi

Batch mode still needs per-file review because portraits, screenshots, and logos respond differently. Use one clear filename and extension so portals do not reject odd suffixes. When the published rule changes, open the sibling tool that matches the new number or format. Evenly lit, face-forward crops usually survive tighter budgets better than wide scenes. Landing under the published maximum usually beats chasing an exact byte count.

What DPI change means here

This tool updates print-density metadata on supported output. Pixel width and height stay the same. A higher DPI value does not invent extra detail.

Shared test method

This tool uses the same upload validation, processing, and download path described on How we test. Representative tools were last verified on 5 October 2026. Individual pages only show a PASS card when that slug was in the measured sample.

DPI is not resolution

Print density does not change how many pixels you have. A 800×600 image at 300 DPI is still 800×600 pixels. Use a resize tool when the destination names a pixel box.

Technical reference

CSS defines resolution units such as dpi for relating pixels to physical size. That is metadata about density, not extra image detail. See the W3C CSS Values resolution units.

Frequently asked questions

Will this sharpen a blurry photo?

No. DPI metadata does not create detail. Start from sufficient pixel dimensions. Neighboring tools exist for nearby sizes; switching is better than forcing the wrong ceiling.

Does every app honor embedded DPI?

Most layout tools do. Some web uploaders ignore DPI entirely and only count pixels and bytes. JPEG target-size encoding is lossy; the preview exists so you can judge tradeoffs honestly.

Can I set 72 DPI for web?

Yes. Seventy-two is common for screen-only workflows that still want a tagged file. Measured bytes on the result card come from the generated file, not a simulated estimate.

WebP or GIF DPI changes?

Output defaults to JPG or PNG for reliable metadata embedding. Convert format separately if needed. Neighboring tools exist for nearby sizes; switching is better than forcing the wrong ceiling.

How do I verify the new DPI?

Read the result details panel and optionally re-run Check Image DPI on the download. Batch mode still shows per-file previews. Review each result before submitting a set.

Will file size jump?

Usually slightly due to re-encoding, not because DPI padding is faked. Measured bytes on the result card come from the generated file, not a simulated estimate.
